2020 Can’t Stop the 268th Birthday of Easton Farmers’ Market

Easton Farmers’ Market in Easton, Pa., is America’s oldest, continuously-operating open-air market.

October 2, 2020

Easton Farmers’ Market, America’s oldest, continuously-operating open-air market is celebrating its birthday — no matter what 2020 throws at it. Because that’s what you do when you’re 268 years old.

Plans to celebrate the birthday in July, as the market does every year during the height of its summer season, were squashed. But this Saturday, Oct. 3, Easton Farmers’ Market will ring in its birthday in Scott Park albeit with a smaller, socially distant day.

Easton Farmers’ Market, presented by Capital BlueCross, got its start in 1752 and has survived the Civil War, the Revolutionary War, the 1918 pandemic, and world wars. The market’s 2020 season featured a move from the market’s beloved home in the town’s Centre Square to a more socially-distant spot along the banks of the Delaware River because organizers were determined to keep the market going, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturdays through November.

“We’re proud of our history and our roots,” said Easton Market District Director Megan McBride. “This season has been challenging, and has us reflecting on the resiliency of the market, and all that it’s weathered in its 268 years. It’s been a long year for all of us, and we needed a reason to celebrate.”

The market will have all of its safety protocols in place, including handwashing stations at the entrances of the market, requiring masks, and pavement markings and signage indicating proper 6-foot distancing.

Historical photos of the market will be on display alongside the Merchandise Tent, adjacent to the footbridge. Stilt walkers from Grins & Grins will be on hand to elevate the party. And a time-lapse drone video will be done that day to capture the set-up, duration, and take-down of the market. The market will also offer a fresh batch of EFM merchandise, including cozy hoodies, long-sleeve tees, and tote bags.

If you feel like celebrating with a sweet treat, find cupcakes, cookies, and pies at Tomblers Bakery; scrumptious baked goods and cookies at Flour Shop Bakery and Apple Ridge Farm; and decadent pies and tarts at Pie + Tart.

Sponsors for the 2020 EFM season include Capital BlueCross, Easton Hospital, Nurture Nature Foundation, Martin Guitar, Easton Coach Co., and The Easton Home.
