Whoever said you couldn’t play with your food hasn’t been to an Easton Farmers’ Market (EFM) festival. On Saturday, Aug. 17, EFM will ring in its annual Tomato Day with a round of Tomato Mini Golf.
Tomato Day, scheduled for 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., promises several free or low-cost activities and a delicious lineup of eats at a time when gardens are just bursting with tomatoes.
Kids can try their hand at the beloved EFM Tomato Mini Golf (free). Families can also check out the tomato tent:
-To try ‘Tomatoes Three Ways’ (oven-roasted tomatoes, tomato hummus, and garden-fresh tomato sauce)
-Or sample more than a dozen heirloom tomatoes and get free seeds in the Easton Community Gardens and PA Master Gardeners’ Heirloom Tomato Tasting and Seed Exchange.
-Both events run 10 a.m. to noon and are available for a $1 donation.
All the leftovers and scraps from Tomato Day festivities will be sent to the Easton Compost Program.
The market’s youngest visitors can also plant their own tomatoes to grow at home at the Power of Produce (POP) Club tent. The POP Club is free to join at any point throughout the season and offers kids a craft, project or activity each week. For every activity they complete, kids can earn $2 in POP bucks to shop the market for fresh fruits and veggies.
EFM vendors will get into the spirit of Tomato Day, offering a variety of tomato treats to enjoy at the market and to take home.
-Don’t miss the Fried Green Tomatoes at Sycamore Grill.
-Stock up on heirloom tomatoes at Salvaterra’s Gardens, Cabbage Throw Farm, Phillips Farms and Scholl Orchards.
-Sip on Bloody Marys from Local Libations vendor, Social Still.
-Snag tomato plants to grow at home from Backyard Growers.
-Enjoy Savory Tomato Cheese Mini Pies and Tomato Pie from Tomblers Bakery.
The Local Libations Tent will feature Scratch/ShawneeCraft Brewery and Social Still. Unity Bank is the sponsor of Tomato Day. Friends of Tom will perform in the Music Tent from 10 a.m. to noon.
Story and a Snack at Easton Public Market (EPM) is getting a jump on Tomato Day with a tomato-themed storytime and snack. Join in the fun at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 8, in the FreySmiles Kids’ Zone at EPM (free).
