Chile Pepper Day Brings the Heat to Easton Farmers’ Market

September 20, 2019

Know someone who thinks they can handle the hottest peppers in the world? Tell ‘em to prove it by competing in the ‘10 Deadly Peppers Hot Pepper Eating Competition’ at Easton Farmers’ Market.

The contest will be held on Saturday, Sept. 21, as part of the Market’s Chile Pepper Day in Centre Square. The fearless can sign up now for the infamous challenge at eastonpublicmarket.com/calendar. The contest is only open to 12 competitors.

The competition starts at 11 a.m. and participants will work their way from mild peppers like jalapenos and habaneros to the Trinidad Moruga Scorpion, which boasts 1.2 - 2 million on the Scoville. A jalapeno, for reference, usually clocks in around 5,000.

In 2017, the contest deadlocked in a tie. In 2018, Brian Kuronya, of Bethlehem, was declared the winner.

The last competitor to raise his or her milk flag of surrender will earn a trophy, $50 in Market tokens, beer from Hijinx Brewery and Shawnee Craft Brewing Co., a variety of hot sauces and peppers, and lots of market swag.

All the pepper scraps from the contest will be disposed of through the Easton Compost Program.

EFM vendors will also get into the spirit of Chile Pepper Day, offering a variety of hot sauces and menu items to enjoy at the market or at home.

Guests can enjoy live music from Rio Basso, a visit from one of the market’s sponsors, Merchants Bank, and guest vendors HiJinx Brewery and Shawnee Craft Brewing Co.

Later that same day in Easton, from 2-7 p.m., foodies can enjoy the second annual West Ward Boil & Brews. This pet-friendly block party is hosted outside Black & Blue, 683 Walnut Street. Food and drink will be served by the restaurants in the Beermuda Triangle - Porters’ Pub, Two Rivers Brewing Co. and Black & Blue. The menu will feature blue crabs, crawfish, crab cakes, and Southern sweets.

Visitors can enjoy outdoor games, kids’ activities and live music from Blue Heart’s Revelry, Big Easy Easton Brass and Pentley Holmes.
